How to Set Up a Thermal Label Printer for E-commerce in India

Thermal label printers dramatically speed up your shipping workflow — no ink, no cutting, no taping. But setting one up correctly for Indian marketplace labels can be tricky. This guide walks you through the complete setup process.

Why Switch to Thermal Printing

  • No ink costs: Thermal printers use heat, not ink cartridges
  • Peel and stick: Labels come out on adhesive rolls — no cutting or taping
  • Faster dispatch: Print a label in 2–3 seconds vs 15+ seconds with A4
  • Better barcode quality: Thermal printing produces crisp, high-contrast barcodes that scan reliably

What You Need

  • A 4×6 inch (100×150mm) thermal label printer
  • Direct thermal label rolls (self-adhesive, 100×150mm)
  • USB cable (included with most printers)
  • Your computer (Windows or Mac)

Setup Steps

1

Install printer drivers

Download the drivers from your printer manufacturer's website. Most popular Indian-market printers (TVS, Zebra, HPRT) have Windows drivers. Mac users may need to use the CUPS interface.

2

Set paper size to 100×150mm

In Printer Properties → Paper Size, set the dimensions to 100mm × 150mm (or 4×6 inches). This is critical — wrong paper sizes cause labels to print cut off or too small.

3

Load the label roll

Follow your printer's manual to load the thermal label roll. Run the calibration/feed function to detect label gaps.

4

Format your marketplace labels

Marketplace PDFs aren't thermal-printer-ready. Use our free tool to crop and resize them.

5

Print and verify

Print a test label and scan the barcode with your phone camera to verify it reads correctly.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Blank labels printing: The label roll may be loaded upside down. The thermal-sensitive side should face the print head.
  • Labels printing too small: Check that paper size is set to 100×150mm, not A4. Also ensure PDF viewer scaling is set to "Actual size".
  • Barcode not scanning: Increase print darkness/density in printer settings. Also ensure the source PDF has the label at full resolution — our label cropper preserves original resolution.
